World War One Words Starting With the Letter L
Lewis gun - A very light machine gun invented by one Lewis, an
officer in the American army.
Light railway - A very narrow-gauge railway on which are pushed
little hand cars.
Liberty Cabbage - Sauerkraut. During the First World War there were patriotic attempts to strip the language of all Germanic words. The First World War's equivalent of today's silly effort to rename French Fries Liberty Fries. In the same way, German Shepherds were renamed Alsatians, and German Measles became the Liberty Measles. Hamburgers became Liberty Sandwiches, while Frankfurters became Hot Dogs (this one actually stuck).
Listening post - One or more men go out in front, at night, of
course, and listen for movements by the enemy.
